choosetoothbrush

When you choose a toothbrush, you have plenty of options. The proper toothbrush is not only important for oral health, but it is also vital for overall health. If an individual has gum disease, then it can lead to the development of serious health conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, so choose your toothbrush wisely. Here are some important things to consider when choosing a toothbrush.

Soft Bristles vs Medium or Hard Bristles

A toothbrush with soft bristles is safer for your teeth than a toothbrush with medium or hard bristles. Toothbrushes with medium or hard bristles can damage your tooth enamel. According to the American Dental Association, medium or hard bristled toothbrushes can also cause damage to gums or tooth root surfaces.

Consider the Size of the Toothbrush

When choosing a toothbrush, you should also be sure the head is the proper size. Be sure the head of the toothbrush can easily reach all of your teeth. If you are buying a toothbrush for your child, then you will want to go with a toothbrush that has a smaller head. There are a variety of children’s toothbrushes available. If you are shopping for an adult toothbrush, then a toothbrush with a head size that is one-inch tall and a half-inch wide will most likely be a suitable size. There are bigger sizes available, but you may have problems cleaning your molars or hard-to-reach areas.

Choose a Toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Acceptance

You should also be sure your toothbrush has the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance. Toothbrushes that have the ADA Seal of Acceptance have been subjected to thorough quality control testing, which ensures the toothbrush is both safe and effective.

Manual or Electric

Manual and electric toothbrushes both have benefits and disadvantages. A manual toothbrush is less expensive than an electric toothbrush and can effectively clean teeth. An electric toothbrush can clean your teeth better with less work, but can be expensive. Electric toothbrushes can also be more fun for children, so they will want to brush. Manual and electric toothbrushes can both effectively clean teeth, so consider your budget and your personal preference.
