Genetics plays a role in so much of who we are. From your eye color to your height, genetics are responsible for many physical traits. However, your outward appearance isn’t the only thing you owe to your parents’ genes! Your genetics play a role in the growth and development of your teeth. So, are good teeth genetic? Yes – to an extent. There are different ways genetics can influence the health of your teeth, as well as different steps you can take to protect and preserve the health of your mouth.

Crooked Teeth

Just like the color of your eyes or the shape of your nose, crooked teeth are, to an extent, hereditary. Often, teeth become crooked when the jaw is too small to allow them to develop correctly. Luckily, modern orthodontic options can treat crooked teeth and give you that straight smile you’ve always wanted.

Enamel Strength

Some folks have softer tooth enamel than others. Your enamel is the hard, protective coating covering your tooth. The softer the enamel, the easier it is for bacteria to eat away and damage the enamel, causing cavities.

Saliva

Your saliva is an incredibly important tool for keeping your mouth healthy, and genetics play a big role in the effectiveness of your saliva. Saliva contains enzymes that break down the food you eat – eliminating some of the bad bacteria, while helping to absorb the necessary calcium, protein, and other nutrients.
